SleepEarly
Privacy Policy

SleepEarly keeps your nights on your phone. There is no account needed to use it, no analytics and no advertising. The only third‑party code in the app is RevenueCat, which handles purchases.
The short version. Your bedtimes, your nights, your routine, your photographs and your profile picture never leave your phone. The exception is bedtime buddies, which you switch on yourself. Buddies share a name you choose and whether you kept your bedtime. Buddy codes also store a name and an iCloud identifier where we can see them. Both are explained below.
What stays on your phone
All of the following is stored only in SleepEarly’s own storage on your device. It is not uploaded, not backed up to us, and not readable by other apps:
- Your bedtime and wake time, and the history of nights you have recorded.
- Your bedtime routine and which parts of it you have finished.
- Photographs taken to confirm a routine task. These are deleted the following morning.
- Your profile picture, kept until you change or remove it.
- Your streaks, stamps, achievements and passport.
- Your settings, including the apps you have chosen to block at bedtime.
- Your name and email address, if you sign in. See “Signing in”.
Deleting SleepEarly deletes all of it. Anything in iCloud is covered under “Deleting your account”.
Bedtime buddies
Buddies is the only feature that uses the network. It is off until you sign in and connect a buddy, and it uses Apple’s iCloud. We run no server of our own.
What your buddies see
Once you have a buddy, SleepEarly writes three things each night to your own private iCloud database, shared only with the buddies you have accepted:
- the date of the night,
- whether you kept your bedtime, went to bed late, or are still up,
- the display name you chose.
That is the complete list. Each night replaces the one before; no history is kept in iCloud. A buddy’s copy of SleepEarly remembers recent nights on their own phone to show the week’s challenge. Your actual bedtime, how late you were, your photographs, your routine and your phone use are never shared. This part lives in your iCloud account, and we cannot see it.
Buddy codes
Buddy codes are different. A code has to be findable by someone who types it, so it is stored in SleepEarly’s public iCloud database. We can see that database, and so can anyone who knows how to look up a code they have. What is stored there:
- Your code, with the identifier iCloud gives you for SleepEarly. This identifier is not your Apple Account, email or phone number, and it means nothing outside this app.
- A request, when you type someone’s code: the code you typed, your identifier, and the display name you chose.
We use these only to deliver requests. Typing a code shares nothing about your nights; it asks. The person whose code it is decides, and nothing is shared until they accept. When they answer, the request leaves their screen straight away. The sender’s copy of SleepEarly then removes it from the public database: once accepted, or after a week either way. It does this the next time it is opened.
Signing in
You can sign in with Apple or with Google. Signing in is needed only for buddies. We never see your password, and no password is created.
- Apple gives the app an identifier for you, and may give a name and an email address the first time. You can hide your real address behind Apple’s private relay; the app works the same either way.
- Google gives the app an identifier for you, your name and your email address. Google knows that you signed in to SleepEarly, under Google’s own privacy policy.
The identifier, name and email address are stored on your phone only. They are never sent to us.
Deleting your account
Delete account, in Settings or on your profile, removes everything described above:
- everything SleepEarly stored on your phone,
- your night record and your sharing in your private iCloud, which ends every buddy’s access,
- your place in any buddy’s sharing,
- your buddy code and the requests you sent, from the public database.
If iCloud cannot be reached at that moment, the iCloud part finishes the next time it can be. Requests other people sent to you belong to them, and their copy of SleepEarly removes them within a week, as above. Once your code is gone, they no longer lead to you.
Deleting the app without deleting your account first leaves your code and requests in iCloud. To remove them, reinstall SleepEarly, sign in, and use Delete account.
Camera, microphone, Health, motion and Screen Time
- Camera. For four optional things: a photograph of a routine task you have finished, deleted the next morning; your profile picture; the movement missions (press‑ups, drinking a glass of water, a short dance), which follow the shape of your body to see the mission is done; and measuring the morning light, which reads how hard the camera has to work and never takes a picture. The movement missions and the light reading record nothing, not even for a moment.
- Microphone and speech. Used only by the morning mission that asks you to read something aloud, and only while that screen is open. Recognition runs on your phone. If your phone cannot recognise speech without the network, SleepEarly does not listen at all. No audio is recorded or kept, and the mission can always be completed without it.
- Health. If you allow it, SleepEarly adds the nights you record to Apple Health as time in bed. It never reads anything from Health.
- Photos. SleepEarly can add an image you asked it to save. It never reads your photo library.
- Motion. Used only by the morning mission that asks you to move. The readings are used as they arrive and never stored or sent.
- Screen Time. If you choose to block apps at bedtime, Apple’s Screen Time system handles it. SleepEarly receives tokens that stand for the apps you chose, not their names, and cannot see which apps you use or for how long.
Notifications
Reminders and alarms are scheduled on your phone. Push notifications are used only to tell you about a buddy’s night, through iCloud, and only while buddies are on.
Diagnostics
SleepEarly has a diagnostics screen for when something does not work. It shows facts such as the app version, your phone model and the state of the alarm, and never your nights. Nothing on it is sent unless you choose to share it yourself, through the app you pick, with the text in front of you.
Purchases
You pay through Apple’s App Store, and SleepEarly never sees your payment details. To know what you have bought, the app uses RevenueCat (revenuecat.com). RevenueCat receives a record of your purchases from Apple, together with a random identifier it creates for this install. It is not given your name, your email or anything about your nights, and it is not used for advertising or tracking. RevenueCat’s own policy is at revenuecat.com/privacy.
Children
SleepEarly is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it.
